Dihyrotestosterone

A derivative of the male hormone, testosterone is an enemy of hair follicles. Testosterone converts to DHT with the aid of enzyme Type II-5 alpha reductase, which is held in the oil glands of hair follicles. DHT shrinks the hair follicles, making it impossible to survive. The hormonal process of testosterone converting to DHT happens in both men and women. Under normal conditions, women have a minute fraction of the level of testosterone that men have, but even a lower level can cause DHT-triggered hair loss in women. When the testosterone levels rise, DHT is more of a problem. Even with high levels of testosterone, blood test could be considered normal. It depends on the body’s chemistry and how sensitive it is to levels of chemicals, including hormones. Common cause of hair loss:

Since hormones operate in the healthiest manner when they are in delicate balance, the androgens, male hormones, do not need to be raised to trigger a problem. If the female hormones are lowered, this can give an edge to the androgens (DHT). Such imbalance can cause hair loss. Hormones are cyclical. Testosterone levels in some men drop by 10% each decade after 30. Women’s hormone levels drop as menopause approaches and decline very sharp during menopause. The cyclic nature of our hair and hormones is one of the reasons hair loss can increase in the short term when you are experiencing a long term slow down of hair loss. Androgenetic Alopecia

This occurs in women due to the action of androgens present in small amounts. This alopecia can be caused by a variety factors tied to the action of hormones including:

(1) Ovarian cysts (2) Taking high androgen index birth control pills (3) Pregnancy (4) Menopause (American Hair Loss Association)

Telogen Effluvium

When the body goes through something traumatic like childbirth, malnutrition, a severe infection, major surgery, or extreme stress, 90% of the hair in the growing phase (anagen) or resting phase (catagen) can shift all at once into the shedding phase (telogen). About 6 weeks after the stressful event is usually when Telogen Effluvium (TE) begins. It is possible to loose a handful of hair at the time when in full-blown telogen effluvium. For some women TE is a chronic disorder and can persist for months and even years without any true understanding of any triggering factors or stressors. (American Hair Loss Association)

Anagen Effluvium

Anagen Effluvium occurs after any insult to the hair follicle that impairs its metabolic activity. This hair loss is commonly associated with chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy targets the body’s rapidly dividing cancer cells and the body’s other rapidly dividing cells such as hair follicles in the growing phase. (American Hair Loss Association)

Traction Alopecia

This condition is caused by localized trauma to the hair follicles from tight hairstyles that pull the hair over time such as braiding, cornrows, tight ponytails, and extensions. If condition is detected early, the hair will regrow. (American Hair Loss Association)
